The Transportation Security Administration has reached a new milestone with more than 1 million travelers, including 7,276 in Hawaii, enrolled in its expedited screening program since it began in 2011.
Specifically in Hawaii, the TSA said there are 802 passengers in Hilo, 4,243 in Honolulu, 1,531 on Maui and 700 on Kauai who are enrolled in its PreCheck program.
TSA’s expedited screening program is available at 133 U.S. airports. Prescreened travelers may leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, leave their laptop in its case and keep a small bag of liquids and gels in a carry-on in select screening lanes.
U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can apply for TSA PreCheck for a fee of $85 and receive an identification card that is valid for five years. Once approved, travelers get a "known traveler" number and can use TSA select security checkpoints when flying on 11 participating carriers: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin America.
The TSA opened its first application center at Indianapolis International Airport and now has more than 300 application centers nationwide, including locations at 26 airports.
